2/18/2009 Alas…
First time visiting and I got disappointed… To make my money worth, my main attack was on the following counters:-
12/27/2008 不怕货比货,只怕不识货!
My first try on half-a-dozen of J. Co!
Birdie once commented that eating donut from Big Apple or J. Co is like nibbling on a puff of cloud.
While there are still so many people out (me inclusive) there raving about donuts from the foregoing, hippo insisted that he still prefers the conventional donuts with sugar-coating (which are harder & thicker)… 12/12/2008 New milestone for my chronicle of cari makan
First time eating these creatures! The texture of the flesh is similar to escargot.
Me: What’s the Chinese name of this seafood? Waitress: 刺螺 Me: English or Malay name? Waitress: Helicopter
11/27/2008 Sushi! Sashimi! Wasabi! If price is the first dictating factor (which means I can afford to visit more than once per month
1) Sushi Zanmai @ 1 Utama (salmon sashimi @ RM2 per slice only!) 2) Sakae Sushi
What say you?
Caviar???? @ Sushi Zanmai, 1U 10/8/2008 Creativity/ innovation in steamboat
Location: New Wing of 1 Utama Shopping Centre
- providing vast variety of condiments - and all sorts of choices of soup!
Greedy hippo...
Our choices
Worth sharing my observation: this is actually the second “Hong Kong style” (港式) restaurant using order forms which are not environmentally friendly….
A waste of paper le.... 9/24/2008 My visit to Miri - cari makan
I visited the Hippo Land (viz. Miri!) from Aug 28th to Sept 3rd.
May I present to you the good food in Miri that one should really try!
The famed mee kolok (earmark of Sarawak) I tried in Miri unfortunately failed to satisfy my taste buds but I found the laksa here were quite savoury.
Hippo and his family unanimously voted for laksa sold at Sin Foh Café to be the best laksa in Miri. The Sin Foh laksa no doubt is tasty, the taste showed a lot of similarity with laksa from Peninsular, but my favourite would be the laksa sold by Nancy Stall, which is located in front of Imperial Mall.

Nancy Stall!
My favorite Nancy Stall's Laksa!
The beef noodle at Nancy Stall is quite famous too...

Another appetite-tempting food that I’d like to recommend is the “kuey chap” (粿杂) available at Hopoh Building for morning session only.
The non-halal kuey chap!

Maybe I’m under-exposed, but I find the dim sum served at Mega Hotel (4°23'47.76"N, 113°59'17.45"E) were of the best ones I’ve ever tried to date! And the most important fact is that the mouth-watering dim sum costs only RM3.80 per dish!
So, you all know what to look for if you happen to drop by Miri! 8/10/2008 spaghetti @ MarcheKawan-kawan sekalian,
Go! Go! Go! Go try the seafood tomato spaghetti at Marche. In case the quality control is not in place, it’s Marche @ The Curve to be exact.
The spaghetti whetted the appetite so much that we ate through half way then only thought of taking picture... Trust me, this photo failed to even reflect 10% of the tastiness! 8/4/2008 “Chicken in paddy field”Actually, it’s rather misleading for Chinese to regard a kind of frog, Rana tigerina rugulosa as 田鸡 (chicken in the paddy field if translating literally).
My colleagues brought me to taste the famous frog meat mee hoon within this region. The location: travel for around 30km from Sg. Siput Main Street until you reach Lasah police station on your left, this house shown below is just next to the police station.
Home-style cooking!
The raw ingredients! I really think I was so brutal by taking this photo before I had them in my stomach.....
I was amazed by this creative DIY flies-trap! Some flies’ favourite e.g. salted fish was placed in the middle of the trap, and they cut a small holes at the bottom. My manager told me that the design principle of this trap is that flies don’t really walk and when they get trapped, they always fly upwards! I think this explanation carried certain truth!
DIY flies-trap
While I was working my way through the meal, the following thoughts kept crossing my mind:- “This is gonna be the last piece of meat that I can have…” “No, wait, still have plenty in the bowl!”
Yummy!!!
Besides the mee hoon, you can also order this dish with rice
Not only we ate everything in sight, we gulped down all the soup which was added with mild alcohol.
I was teasing my colleague that his face turned red even with the mild alcohol content in the soup, but I did not realized that even my ears also flushed!
The price=RM12 per bowl. To me, it’s really worth eating . So, this is another delicacy for you to try if you are visiting me! Hehe…
Rating: 7/20/2008 Chicken Rice in Sg. SiputI’m too much an amateur gourmet in recommending good food. I think my recommendation would be more constructive if I introduce the following rating:-
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Must not miss! – for extraordinarily delicious food ![]() ![]() ![]() Thumbs up! – above average tastiness![]() ![]() Worth trying! – special/rare food with above average tastiness
Chang tried to act cool...
Ban Woh Coffee House, which is located at Sg. Siput main street, selling chicken and char siu rice with 3 star rating. Normally, grilled/steamed chicken (白斩) or char siu will be served straight, but not for chicken/char siu rice at Ban Who. The chef will fry the chicken and char siu with soy and oyster sauces before serving.
Chicken + char siu rice
Worth mentioning, the price is a bit on the high end. Normal char siu + chicken rice = RM5 Char siu + chicken + fried rice + fried egg = RM9.50 (so not proportionate!)
Last but not least, I’d like to reiterate that, I can be your food guide, if you are visiting me in Sg. Siput! 7/14/2008 The best 烧肉 in Sg. SiputIt’s located here!
The crispiness and crunchiness of the 烧肉 make it so irresistible!
I can be your food guide if you are paying me a visit! |
